Folks, to walk a marathon I’m going to need some help, plus it’s my chance to help others.

‘Ooh, I get by with a little help from my friends…’

The whole point of walking 42 km around Spinnaker Park was to see if my 53 year old legs could do it. But as an added bonus, for every lap I do, I’m going to toss some money into a charity bucket.

Which means I’m going to need three things:

  1. A bucket
  2. A charity
  3. Someone to guard the bucket

Ok, the bucket (and it’s guardian) should be fairly easy to sort out, I’m pretty confident I can take care of those two.

Finding a charity is a bit trickier. I have a couple of favourites who receive a portion each month from ‘the Bray Millions’, but I’m looking for one in particular that is:

  • Gladstone owned and operated, i.e.: not affiliated with a larger charity so the $ stay in town.
  • A truly worthy cause.

If you are involved in a charity, or know someone looking for a few extra bucks to help make our part of the world a slightly better place, then drop me a line, I’m all ears… and feet.

Also, if anyone is keen to pitch in on the day, feel free to toss in a few bucks yourself, or sponsor me per lap.

The goal is 26 laps (there’s no way I’ll be doing anymore than that!) so it’s up to you to think of how much you’d like to give each time I cross the start/finish line.

Pre-Marathon Update

Dugongs are a local icon, and the totem for slightly tubby walkers

With exactly two months to go, yesterday was my biggest walk so far, clocking up 21 klms, or 13 laps of the park, in 3 hours and 37 mins. I’ve had a post-stagger rum and, quite frankly, I’m feeling pretty darn good; now.

Of course the rum may have something to do with that…

Speaking of rum, I’m also looking for a volunteer to hand me a cold one as I cross the line.

Any takers?!

‘What would you do if I sang out of tune, would you stand up and walk laps with me…’
